if im having algae problems should i be running a uv steralizer?

nice lighting and tank

Uv sterilizer will not solve the problem .. usually if you have algae problems it is your lighting spectrum, or lights on too much .. do you have plecos\algae eaters in the tank?? I use them in all my tanks..

Grab up a couple little common plecos , just as cleaners.. they are cheap and do a great job!! Just a suggestion my friend..

No probs buddy,, that's why this site is here.. Lots of us here have been keeping-breeding cichlids for30+ years, and love helping others new or not educated in these fish, very happy to help my friend..

If you are having algae trouble you could try a bristlenose pleco or two, they are very good algae eaters and they stay around 5". I prefer them over all others but sometimes they do cost more than the common plecos.

Curtis are they led moon lights?
curtis miller » posted 2009/11/06 05:11 am
yes they are justin.

how many do you have hooked up? The more surface agitation you have the better they will look. The more the surface of the water moves it will make the whole bottom of your tank sparkle.

i cant remember how many there are, its two strips of them. it looks way better in real life. i have a coralia 2 powerhead on each end of the tank so it looks nice with all the water movement

they are supposed to be wide angle leds as well

the algae build up is the worst on my diy background and it looks like its in the spots that the moon lighting hits the background because they sit twords the back of the tank

i like the algae on my decor, the fish love it they are always grazing on it, its also a sign of a healthy tank as long as it does not cloud your water
curtis miller » posted 2009/11/06 05:30 am
i like some of it too but its building up quite a bit

there is a great article on cichlid-forum.com that explains different types of algae and ways to control them

I like your moon lights Curtis. Is the tank in direct sunlight? The wall looks rather bright, that's why I ask. Tank lights being on too long, or the tank being in sunlight too long/much can cause algae to grow (even if it's across the room from a window) .

thanks bip it is across the room from a window, but we alway have the shades down
