New slate pack 5-5-08
New slate pack 5-5-08
I went to The Home Depot and looked at rocks, slate in particular.. I wanted to add another level to the rock structure in my tank. for $10, I got about 25 pounds (7 slate rocks). It was a great deal! I did windex them all, scrape them with a stainless steel brush, boil them for 1 hour, windex and scrape them again, and boil them for a second time.. No residue! No micro organisms! No cloudy water! Tell me what you think...

The windex would have been my concern too. I am relieved you said everything is ok. Tank looks good Ted.

You know you can use a dilute bleach solution or even better isopropol alcohol to kill microorganisms; just let the pieces soak for 1 hour or so. If use bleach then soak again in a dechorinator for another hour. The tank looks great!

i thought about the bleach, but didnt have any dechlorinator. I did boil with tons of salt, however. i used the windex more with the intent of getting the dirt and grime off of the slate

Looks great! a bit unstable.....but looks great!
I usually scrub my rocks under running water with a scrub brush - and then when they "look clean" - I put them in the dishwasher (the boiling water and running jets take care of any left over dirt and kill off any organisms)
My wife might not like this technique - but it works good for me! :)

i used the running water with the steel brush... but the dishwasher is a great idea!
