Why Start Small !?

by Phil Haines from Adelaide / AUS
In the hobby since Sept 2009.

Description

  • Category: African
  • Tank size: 70x24x35 inches = 254 gallons
  • Tank size: 177x60x88 cm = 961 liters

Was able to get this tank for a really good price si I thought why start small. Only had it up and running for 4 months now so would appreciate any feedback to help me progress my tank, be it good or bad.
I have an extremely different combination of cichlids in the tank, 30 different varieties plus 2 pleco's and a bristlenose. I can list them if anybody wishes.

Decoration

  • Gravel: 100 kg of black gravel with 5 kg of white mixed into top layer.
  • Plants: Only silk artificial ones, just for a little bit of hiding space for the fish.

Main rocks are moon rock, smaller ones are volcanic lava rock which provides numerous caverns for the fish to play and hide in.

Technics

  • Light: 1 x 54w T5 HO Powerglo tube. Is this enough?
  • Light-Duration: 8 hrs daily
  • Filtration: Eheim 2260 with multiple taps

looks tight man!
i would upgrade the filtration and add a second 2260.

i have an fx5 and a 2260 running on my 75g tropheus tank.

i have 45 fish in there.

also, i would upgrade the lighting by using 2x coralife 4ft t5no dual bulb fixtures.

you can get them shipped to your door for $55 each + shipping from this website i always use them for lighting.

www.hellolights.com

also i would remove the fake corals.

they take away from the beuty of the natural stone.

the rock by itself would look good.

I totally agree with take away the fake coral....even the plants maybe. Just do natural rock nooks and caves. I always add a background to my tanks, they dont have to be store bought even. I like to cut cardboard to the right size and do interesting paint treatments to them, then attach them to the outside back. I did one tank with "fleck stone", its a spray paint thats a 2 step process, its a slightly textured rock look, comes in a wide range of colors.

i dont think its 254 gal

im curious as to why you would think this?

judging from the size of the 2260 intake and comparing that to the rest of the tank, it looks like that to me.

the intake on a 2260 is massive.

proportionatly, it looks right to me.

i belive you brian, the intake tube is what cought my eye, i didnt think it was that big

I like your tank but i don't think it's that big I have a 150 in my wall and it looks like i can put your tank in it

i like the tank, but the size is not correct. it looks like my 55g long.
i think yours is 48long x 17 deep x 21 high. makes it around a 70 gallon
if yours was 70inches long you would not be able to fit in the picture. 70 is almost 6 feet long.

Louis you can't judge a tank's size by what fits in a camera's lens. You need to know that first, all cameras do not have the same lenses. Maybe a camera phone or a point n shoot, but some of us have digital SLR's. Even professional cameras. Second, you can back up, take a photo, and fit anything in. Perspective. And then crop that to only the portion you would like to have in your photo.

As for whether or not it's that size, well we aren't there so it's difficult to say for 100% sure.

the size is right, i didnt belive it at first but the intake on the 2260 is 1 in in diameter, knowing that now in certain its right

looks like a 90 gal to me

Looks damn good, I would definitely get the fake coral out, but as for the size which don't matter to me as some that have a fetish to accuracy, but I'm diggin my favorite fish in the bottom left corner... the Frontosa!!
