55 Gallon Mixed Malawi Tank

  • Tank size: 48x13x21 inches = 56 gallons
  • Tank size: 121x33x53 cm = 211 liters

    My first foray into the world of Cichlids. 55 Gallon standard Tank. Painted black back, AGA Black stand, and 10 gallon waterchange tank inside stand. This was the "Budget" tank and I am pleased to say due to some carpentry by myself and others, getting the tank used from a friend, and Pet Supplies Plus Clearances we have put the tank up for about $350 total.

    Current inhabitants:
    1 Electric Blue Ahli (Approximately 5" Poor guy had been at PetSmart for 2 months, was beat up by two other Ahli's for the first two weeks he was there)
    3 Red Zebras (Approximately 2" each)
    3 Compressiceps (Approximately 2" Each)
    2 Peacocks (1 is about 1.5", 1 is about 2")
    1 Common Pleco (Approximately 6")

Decoration

  • Gravel: 50 lbs Silica Sand
  • Plants: 1 Java Fern
    2 Large Anubis
    Java Moss growing on driftwood and some rocks

    Lava Rocks, Lace Rock, One large Piece of Driftwood, Flat Rainbow rock

Technics

  • Light: 2X48" 40W T12 Plant and Aquarium Bulbs
  • Light-Duration: 10 hours on at 10AM off at 8PM
  • Filtration: 1 Aquaclear 110 Powerfilter
    1 Whisper 20-40 Powerfilter with matrix carbon and filter floss
    1 Fluval 104 Canister Filter

    200W Theo Hydor Heater

love the tank, and the fish are beautiful, i bet water changes are hard to do though, with the couch right there I mean :)

Actually I keep the 10 gallon waterchange tank under the stand with a heater and a bubble wall. Let it simmer for a few days with materials and buffer, slide the loveseat out of the way and just siphon it up into the tank. Easy as pie! :)

Overfiltering plus 2-3 10 gallon waterchanges a week equals Happy Fish!

Could be your water makin it cloudy too, i had that problem and started getting water from a freinds house, now its perfect
