Cool tank, but awkward mix. Those peacock bass will have lots of snacks as they grow.

So far so good. I had another peacock bass in there before (about twice as big as my current guys) and he never bothered any of the other fish. It may be due to the fact that I gave hime live food every day. Anyway... I'm thinking of starting up another tank and might split the the big and little fish up.

Nice stock list. After you split up the tank you should add Salvinis. That'll add some color and they'll be fine with those guys.

Very nice set up.How do you keep filtration on such a large tank and with so much stock?
mike larue » posted 2009/10/27 06:42 am
How do you keep down the aggresion levels, also?
Ryan Praill » posted 2009/10/27 06:53 am
johnny walker black label I see...
thats the GOOD scotch, made right here in my city of Windsor Ont.
Gorgeous tank BTW, keep up the good work.
James Sing » posted 2009/10/27 08:53 am
Thanks again everyone.

Mike: Underneath the tank, inside the cupboard is another 600 gal tank that is divided into 4 chambers full of filtration medium. The filter is fed by 2 submersible pumps, 2 external pumps, and one overflow pipe.

The agression level in my tank is pretty low. Actually it is alot lower now than when I had only 20 fish in the tank. The only time it really flares up is when a pair decides to mate and they'll defend a corner for a week or so.

you sir are a cichlid master. obvious but i'll say it any way great tank. Do you do the up keep or do you contract it out???

James Sing » posted 2009/11/03 05:12 am
LOL! Thanks Stephen, however "master" I am not. Just because I've got the biggest sword, it doesn't make the master samurai.

Cocerning the upkeep, I do it all myself. Why take all the fun out of the hobby?

James I feel bad for the peacocks and poor little zebra's. They may be eaten or roughed up. Those americans get very big. Feeding is way different for the mbuna's. They can't handle alot of high protien foods. It would have been good if you had left the africans off. Just my opinion.
James Sing » posted 2009/11/05 05:55 pm
Roger... you know alot more about cichlids than I do and I appreciate all the advice you give me. As I've said before, my Africans were bought when I started the hobby when I wasn't aware of the non-mixing policy. I don't plan on adding any more Africans to the tank.

That said however, I can honestly say that the Africans are the healthiest fish in the tank. Their colouring is vibrant, their fins are emaculate, and their size is huge. Before my big water change accident, I hadn't lost a fish to sickness in my tank's two year life. Granted, Elvis did make a meal out of an injured OB back at the beginning of the year, but that was 8 months ago when he was half his final length. If anything, the Americans are the least of the African's worries. All my big Americans are too busy harrassing each other to bother about their smaller tank mates.

I try my absolute hardest to accomodate both kinds of fish:

- I keep my tank's pH at a strict 7.5
- My tank is full of logs and rocks for the smaller fish to hide.
- At feeding time I first put in green vegetables and then a small amount of spirulina pellets to fill up the Africans. Apart from the Severums, the other Americans won't look at the greens. I then put in high protein food, live food and prepared food for the Americans. The Africans are usually so full, they usually don't even bother with the food I give to the Americans.
- When I had my 2 peacock bass, I made sure they were full every night so they wouldn't be interested in the Africans. And you saw how BIG Elvis got, so I consider losing only ONE OB in two years a pretty big achievement.

Once again Roger, I DO appreciate your input. I just wanted you to know that I am aware of potential problems and that I am doing my best to prevent them.
