Very nice, I walk through the wisconsin river to pick up driftwood.

Very cool looking piece. Are you worried at all that the fish will scratch themselves on the pointy ends?

Realy like the wood but if i was mine i would use my dremel and sand and round down some of those pointy ends- when I got my id shark he was all scratched up beacuse of the wood in the tank - i dremeled it and now his scratches are gone and the wood still loks great !
Tang O' (m) » posted 2009/03/20 10:45 pm
You don't think fish get scratched in nature? I think it would be best to leave it as is, seeing that is how it naturally came (from your saw/ax). I keep pointed edges cause it makes it look fresh from the river (but I like natural biotopes so..)
Christie ♥ » posted 2009/03/20 11:25 pm
Of course they get scratched in nature, I just don't like them scratched up in my tank. Also prefer the natural look. I don't think he should cut them off, maybe just soften them a bit.

coyotes tang, and its going in just like this , no sanding or smoothing . i think if i did that it would take away from it . i like the natural look and never hed any scratches from the other branch thats pointy so taking my chances .

That is one wicked hunk of wood. You would have to out-do my rinky dink pieces, lol. How big is this? Great find. I can't just like go find any ole piece of wood and stick it in the tank right? It has to be only certain kinds?

we could probably arange something russell . i'm headed home on the weekend of the 19th in april . bip i'm pretty sure this is a piece of cottonwood or elm , as we dont have many other species of trees along the river here . it's been sitting for years though . i'd say you'd be safe with most kinds of wood if you soak, boil them and get most of the tannins out . i on the other hand only do a power washing , soak in light bleach mixture for a day to kill anything , and another power washing . because i like the way the tannins look in my tanks . it looks more natural and softens the water . alex always said it helps in health for fish too . i agree and also think their colors look better too . just my preference though , everyone is different .
harvick fan (m) » posted 2009/03/21 05:47 pm
*and soak again to get bleach out ..... thinking ahead and not typing i guess . stoooopid me . btw doing it my way you have to weight the wood down as it still floats . it eventually gets water logged and sinks though . ;o)

That is an awesome piece Harvick, I wish I could find some smaller pieces for the bottom of my new tank. I like tannins in my tanks within reason, if it gets so dark to the point I cannot see the back of the tank, I have issues then.

pete is there a reason your "yelling" thanks for the comments but could you please take the caps off .
harvick fan (m) » posted 2009/03/21 07:32 pm
yeah tang same here but usually it doesnt leach to bad between weekly water changes . you can stay up on the color that way . i have noticed that my fish have no health problems though with the tannins . only problem i have it kind of cuts light penetration if you have real plants . they don't grow as fast
Tang O' (m) » posted 2009/03/21 08:07 pm
I agree about the lights, I actually added fish with ick into the tank and no other fish got contaminated, now I am not saying that is because of the tannins, but I seriously don't think I could kill a fish without trying. Tannins seem to do wonders for the fish.

actually stuck this in the 125 just now looks kinda dorky with rocks weighing it down but it's going to look sweet when its fully waterlogged . will get a pic up soon . i need to find some val for the 125 what species do you suggest . i havent had any luck with the corkscrew .
Tang O' (m) » posted 2009/03/21 09:11 pm
i like the jungle vals, they are large leaved and grow like weeds for me
harvick fan (m) » posted 2009/03/21 09:15 pm
any other plants that grow large for back ground area besides swords or vals . no luck with ludwiga either . thinking some arrowleafed plants (not sure of exact name )

anacharis and cabomba are native here to the us, so you could go collect your own, grows fast, keeps algae to a min, absorbs all the bad stuff that might go wrong with a tank, oh and grows fast. I bought a bunch of cabomba that was 6" tall, 4 months later it was 16" long easily per strand.
