There is no red devil there. its a Red zebra (Pseudotropheus estherae) and that jack shouldnt be mixed in with africans different water types and fiff tempraments

lol tempernments have nothing to do with it , diet and water do . africans need low protein diet , where as the jack needs protein .water for the africans needs to be a high ph and dempsey lower , as far as id , you dont have a red devil , but two red zebras , a yellow lab , possible kenyi male ,a stoni and either a eb johannii or a maingano

yes , your africans can get bloat if too much protein in diet. i would seperate them to different tanks and feed them accordingly

what you mean ? i feed then osi cichlid flake food and ocean star pellets? what wrong with that?

harvick is saying that they require different diets; like feeding a dog rat food and a rat dog food.....

hi stephen .. not sure what the protein percent in those foods are but the jd needs a high prtein and the africians need a very low protein percent ..i feed a veg flake to my africians.. if the africians eat to much the get malawai bloat and will die on you .. and if the jd doesnt get enough protein he will suffer too.. hope this helps..

nothing wrong , just that your dempsey will be happier with a "meatier" diet ie: night crawlers , shrimp , meal worms etc . while your africans will develope bloat off a diet like that . they come from two different parts of the world , and two different diets and water parameters . and should be cared for in a way thats as close to natural as possible . in my opinion

damm. will i wanted a new tank anywayz will i just have to figure this all out..so i split them up into two different tanks?south american @ african:)so whats the ph of both sopose to be?
harvick fan » posted 2008/06/30 - 03:11
the dempsey is actually central american and ph of 6.5 - 7.5 , africans the higher the ph the better , my tanks are at 8.1 straight out of the tap.

The nimbochromis livingstonni has a dietary requirement aligned more with the dempsey than the mbuna's (even african cichlids have different dietary requirements). The malawi's would prefer a higher pH and kH (alkalinity), though I wouldn't adjust that until nitrates have been brought under control. You need to do some gradual water changes to get nitrates down to 20ppm and keep consistently them below 40ppm.
