Yeah that horizontal stripe threw me also.. Looks like the stripe on a red empress juvie... we have a couple of Super Reds Empress we are growing out and they are in the same tank so we got to get close comparisons.. But I still have No CLUE! Wife wanted him and he is very colorful so I said why not...

looks like a Protomelas Spilonotus sulphurhead that has been beefed up with hormones . we have been seeing fish, especially peacocks at 1.25"-2" that are knocked out with color & elongated fins but fade with time & many turn out to be females.

Vince that would suck about losing color and turning out to be female..Then I would have to get a male to go with it.

Vince is pretty smart!

Vince after checking out the profile on cichlid forum I do believe that is what he is and she looks to be a female of the same kind...will be interesting to see what she is holding.

Thank you all for your help

there are traits in this fish from a few species, and similarities in comparrison to the P.Spilonotus "Mara", however, they are color traits only. Body style is that of an Off breed fryeri (juvenile Lumbaulo), with the yellow crest (similar to a Mara) of the Lithobates. The body stripe is something possible in all haps/peacocks under stress, especially when first introduced to a new habitat. The Spilonotus have a fine red strip on their dorsal, and do not have have any caudal coloring other than black until full adult size is attained, and in which case many still do not have any color other than the traditional white bar and black fade common in the Proto. species. My guess on this Lee, is a hybrid farmed accident, sent to a petshop as an assorted cichlid to get rid of them to folks who may not know what they are getting, or may not care as long as it has color. (not referring to you). Sorry I didn't get the chance to look earlier, it's been a LONG week with this mandatory overtime crap.

Well I figured it didn't matter as We only bought it for his intense color(Wife) and he can always go in the show tank for some added color..
