male of a breeding pair

I'm guessing the male and female are 1 1/2 years old. he is the size of my hand and built the nest and guarded the eggs and fry ....... which I have 90 of about 2" long now and really just now getting some nice color to them.

They were raised in a 72 gal bowfront tank and just now moved to a smaller home a 38 gal tank so the juvi's could have plenty of room to grow. hopefully in a month or so I can sell the babies and return mom and pop to their old home place

other fish include an albino bushy nose pleco,a delicatge whiptail catfish and several types of cories and an upside down catfish

as it says at the bottom of the pic it is a Vieja heterospila, as far as I can find they have no common name

FYI; vieja heteroSPILA and cichlasoma synspilum are the scientific names for the synspilum, just as for the convict, for example, they are archocentrus / cryptoheros nigrofasciatus, or cichlasoma nigrofasciatum, or heros nigrofasciatus. there can be a few different scientific names for several different cichlids. and the change (update) these names quite frequently. i don't exactly understand it all, but enough to maybe pass a little info for you. :)

I thought the cichlasoma synspilum was the red head ... they look real close except for the red and white head ....

the synspilum and the red headed cichlid are closely related, just as are the midas and red devil. some would even say they are the same fish. but these fish here are synspilums.

Cichlasoma heterospilum is the new proper name ... not the reheaded cichlasoma synspilum ... close not no cigar
