Very nice!!! I'm assuming your GT & JD are in the same tank - what size is the tank and how well do they get along?

Is this female?
kyle jackson » posted 2007/09/18 06:54 pm
im pretty sure male, cuz of the dots on gills
Nathan Sederholm » posted 2007/09/18 06:59 pm
I thought that was a sign of a female though. The males have less dots. I could be wrong.
kyle jackson » posted 2007/09/18 07:07 pm
i think the females the dots run to gether to form lines.

aaron, gt & jd are in a 120 gal, with the devil. latley the jd has been pushing the gt aroud a little bit, but nuthing seriuos.
Aaron B » posted 2007/09/18 07:37 pm
Thanks for the info Kyle. I'm picking up a 125 today and I am going to put a GT along with the (3) Firemouths and (1) Green Severum I already own. I would like to also put a JD in there but I don't want a ton of "drama" so I may go with a Salvini in place of the JD. Tough decision :)
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 07:38 pm
defenately male, but Nathan does have a point, this male have unusual gill coloration (lower part), which usually belongs to the female.
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 07:39 pm
*definitely^
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 07:46 pm
Aaron, Salvini allot more active and agressive fish then a JD. But in 125 gallon you can try to have either (JD or Salvini), with other you listed, if you provide enough hiding places, so each fish can secure some space, or run away from more dominate fish.
Nathan Sederholm » posted 2007/09/18 07:47 pm
They are harder than I thought then.
Nathan Sederholm » posted 2007/09/18 07:49 pm
Salvini's are neat but I'd say JD and I have both.
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 07:52 pm
Nate, let Salvini become adult, and you'll see, specially if it's a male.
Nathan Sederholm » posted 2007/09/18 07:54 pm
It's more yellow, I think it is a female.
Aaron B » posted 2007/09/18 07:54 pm
Hmm. Well that goes to show you the misinformation thats out on the web. I was on a sight that said a Salvini was peacefull. I guess my issue is that most the info I've gotten from people that have owned GT's have said that they are peacefull as long as you give them space and don't put fish in that look somewhat like them like a Texan as they will fight. I thought maybe this might happen with a JD but not a Salvini.

Also, I don't want to get anything that will beat up the fish I currently own.
kyle jackson » posted 2007/09/18 07:57 pm
aaron this is my first jd, and have to admit like it alot. the jd and gt dont have enough drama where i wouldnt think of getting one.
Nathan Sederholm » posted 2007/09/18 08:01 pm
I think JD would be perfect. Ya, that big of a tank you would be ok with either. Both nice fish. Plus there are a lot of GT and JD in the same tank here. So what's the best way Alex to tell apart sex of JD?
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 08:03 pm
yes, internet is confusing, but it's up to you to decide who is the person to believe base on your own reading and research. Summaries opinions and make your own decision. With Cichlids you'll be always at risk, that it may not work, but if you have an experience you have more chance to pick right candidates for your set up.
kyle jackson » posted 2007/09/18 08:16 pm
also not all cichlids the same. some more even tempered than others. like my devil, if he hade the tempermemt of j&ts or marcs he would be alone. but cuz he is fairly tame can house other fish with him. some times you just have to wait and see.
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 08:23 pm
*Nate, I know you have a female, I just said it in contest, "If it's a male", since we don't know what fish gender Aaron end up to buy
As for JD sex differences,.. man see ton of my pictures, it will explain best then I can:)

It seems that accept for the most aggresive cichlids (Dovii, Red Devil, ect) The agressiveness differs greatly between individual fish. I see alot of people call Firemouths mildly agressive. I have one that will go after anything. I think I'll go with a small GT & JD and hopefully they will get used to each other and their tank mates as they grow.
Aaron B » posted 2007/09/18 08:26 pm
I think tank space is realy the key to having less agression. Most people that have problems seem to have jambed too many fish in their tank.
kyle jackson » posted 2007/09/18 08:28 pm
aaron that mix should be ok, but like alex says, lots of hideing places.
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 08:33 pm
Yeah, your Firemouth is going after everything YOU have, but give him JD, or Salvini or even more agro fish in equal size and he'll suck. Trust me, I have and had all of them. My previously very nasty 5" male Firemouth is almost last in the rank with even similar sized cichlids (forget larger) I have in my 210 g, following only by last of my Odessa barb.
It’s very true saying about Firemouth , they all bluff. If other fight back, they gave up faster then most other cichlids, right after couple jaw locks, if not after the first.
He does become nasty with weaker fish, that’s true
Aaron B » posted 2007/09/18 09:12 pm
LOL! I am sure once JD & GT are close to his size the tables will turn. He could use someone picking on him for once as long as no one gets hurt. If you've have or had a dominant male Firemouth then you know they are one of the most stunning cichlids especially at breeding time. Mine will actually get lime green on his eyelids at that time and his colors get so intense that he almost looks unreal.
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 09:20 pm
yeah, indeed they are beautiful, I know, if you want check my pictures here (under my name, you'll see that bugger)

Yep that's a nice looking Meeki Alex. I saw a little gill flarin' going on so I know he has some 'tude. You're JD's are very nice and that Cuban is outstanding. Very nice collection!!!
Alex Odesit » posted 2007/09/18 09:55 pm
thanks Aaron, you'll be Ok, with JD in your new set up. Get some Botia loach (group of 4 at least). Salvini is nasty once adult. The difference between JD and Salvini, is that JD will only chase other from his territory and not always, but Salvini… if pick on some one, may chase it to death. And it wont be your new JD, but other less powerful fish you have already, including Meeki and Severum.

OK. Thanks for your help Alex. I realy appreciate it!
