Most ppl use TWO power heads turned upside down on oppist ends to get a good water push out all the outlets..
This would be cheaper and not heat the tank up like the One pump you are going to need for this.. I hope U did not seal it already if you decide to do the powerheads.. With this set up, you wil have more pressure on one side than the other with out a middle switch to control the flow out on one side..

POOR design for the reasons I stated.. HE doesn't even know what to use on it.. THATS why..

IF he has not sealed it, he can fix it to work a lot better than what it is now.. PUMPS are expensive. Powerheads wil give him a good flow but not like it is designed. FOR the reasons I stated.

what would you do ryan for undergravel?
Gallery Moderator » posted 2007/10/14 - 02:12
I am settled, Dont' push it..

Bad design. RL wil find that out. Changable thou.. Great that it is not sealed.. I would like to do one too but it would be ran with powerheads that do a reverse flow with a pre filter on them so NO fish/other gets sucked in.. This wil work, but not with ONE inlet for the flow control. Good luck RL and let us know how it turns out for you..

Im not sure what its supposed to do...so I have no real idea. Whole different concept from the UGs I'm familiar with.

im looking to have better water flow and to keep gravel cleaner
Jerry Goebert » posted 2007/10/14 - 02:27
Standard UGFs try to pull the water evenly through the gravel. This design seems to pull water from only 4 small areas...

i had this pvc pipe siting around and was playing around with some idea for increased water flow,i was thinking the opposite, pusing air through for water flow, if i do a ugf should i run it threw as much base as possible?

up and down covering back to front having pvc spaced about two inches between rows?

R L, listen I know what you're up to, you want to build an undergravel jet system(UGJ). What you need to do is get some powerheads that will fit a prefilter or sponge(to trap debris) which I find that the Maxi-Jets 600-1200 work great and are cheap in fosters and smith, you can also get the prefilters cheap w/ F&S. You want to create 3-4 jets per filter and place jets in desired locations for your decor. To make jets take off your end caps and just boil the end of the pvc and pinch to make "jets" then place in tank. I will find a site to better assist you. hold on...

Go here R L and GM, You guys will like it! I've got this setup in my 46g, it's money, trust me!

RL: are you planning to get cichlids???
Jerry Goebert » posted 2007/10/14 - 19:29
J&T....great post. What about reversing the powerheads of a standard UGF ?
R L » posted 2007/10/14 - 23:47
yes chuck, i have some african cichlids
THE chuck » posted 2007/10/15 - 22:18
i think that undergravel systems are crappi for cichlids( coz of their digging habits)
Travis Ethridge » posted 2007/10/16 - 02:49
not all cichlids dig, but when they do its a pain in the butt... especially the Africans, just cover the pvc w/ large lace rock or other decor, remember to place jets and pvc pipe accordingly to best fit deco...

Don't even do an undergravel filter! Just get a canister filter.
Travis Ethridge » posted 2007/10/17 - 05:22
Nate, I was suggesting undergravel jets that comes from the gravel bed, and by no means do they replace the filtration, just help keep the gravel bed clear.
Nathan Sederholm » posted 2007/10/17 - 05:27
Ya, I know but with minimal substrate and a good canister filter it is unnecessary. I know what you mean though. Just have to do the occasional gravel cleaning and don't overfeed.
Travis Ethridge » posted 2007/10/17 - 05:33
yeah you definitley are right, no matter what you have to do tank maintenance :)

Yes, as we know. :o) That beautiful Brown stinky stuff we flush down our drains!
