good heavens please help!!! =(
good heavens please help!!! =(
Altolamprologus calvus
Two days ago he looked normal, yesterday he looked ok, and just a few hours ago he looks like this.
I did have to switch foods a few days ago and I'm not sure he has been eating. The longer story is posted in the forums.
I am also pimafixing the tank (day 3) for the peacocks fin fungus and I put some melafix in just a little while ago (I'm trying anything to help.... I don't want to loose my fav fish).
Also it has been very hot here the last few days so I have a fan on low blowing on the water which has cooled the tank to almost normal temp (84ish is what it is at now).
All other fish are doing fine.
Is there anything that I can do to help him. What is going on with him.
I'm going to have a meltdown soon =(

Have you checked your amonia in your tank? I think you have poor water quality, his eyes are cloudy? Has he been grasping for air?

He seems to be a bit though non of the other fish seem to have any issues. How do I quickly drop the ammonia level if that is what is it. Just a water change? I usually like to leave that water out over night but if I need to do an immediate one with some stress coat I will do that.

I do not have anything to test the ammonia unfortunately. I did take the carbon filters out since I'm medicating the tank. This won't hurt anything will it?

Just keep in mind that too much meds can also kill fish. so you want to keep a good measure on it, did you do a water change a few days ago?? any potential thread to him in that tank meaning any bigger and meaner fish?

If you hav a different tank that you are not medicating, I would get him in that. If not maybe get him into a five gallon bucket with fresh non-chlorinated water and run a pump with air into it...I have had to do that in a pinch before...

We don't have a spare pump. The tank that is not medicated is a guppy/cory cat/neon tank.... that be ok? PH levels are actually quite similar.
No other fish ever seem to bug him to much, they kinda pick on him a bit but there have never been signs of any wounds.

how old is your fish?
Sarah Jellison » posted 2008/09/02 - 03:26
I have had him for a year, and the person I got them from said he was about 2 years old so about 3 years?

in his condition... AGE is one of the factor...

Warm, upper 80s, water holds less oxygen than cooler water. Be sure your pumps, filters and airstones are working effectively. Some fish are better than others when dealing with lowwer oxygen levels.

If the other fish are dealing with a fungal infection he may have it as well internally or in the gills so you cant see it.....I buy flagyl (antifungal) online and crush it and put it in the water with the fish. I use 500mg per 40 gallons. I have saved several fish using this antibiotic. I actually saved several of my tropheus from severe bloat with this method (I also put epsom salt in the water with it). I actually went so far as to go to the vets office and ask for a perscription of flagyl for my tank since the online stuff woulf take too long. They thought I was nuts trying to save my fish, but they just dont understand so....

Sad news =(
I just got home from work and my little guy is no more.
Thank you all for your suggestions. On the plus side, all the other fish seem to be fine still and the peacocks fin fungus is going down.

Calvus and comps do not take well to temp changes. They can easily parish with a 3 degree temp change.
