I think males show mating colors more than females but I could be wrong, I have seen a pair of jewels both brite red. Nice Jewel btw.

the only way i can tell is my big fella's black spot on his side disappears when he turns on his colours

U can also tell by the size of the male, he is bigger then the female too. Love the jewel pic.

Also the male has more jewels and his jewels are alot bigger then the females.
