Ok.. thanks. You also have some? Have they ever bred? Cause mine have once but the eggs disappeared the next day.. Can it have been my scavenger? there are no other fish with em..

I only have 1, I was at my lfs and he was all by himself and I felt sorry for him so bought him!!! I would have thought the eggs would have been eaten by the scavenger, its normally other fish that would eat the eggs. What is the scavenger??

HELP! since yesterday the male is chasing the female around, nd now the female is always a dull colour unlike before, nd always in one corner or right below the surface just floating but still right way around... Can it be the male wants to get rid of it or what? What can i do??
THE chuck » posted 2007/09/13 - 10:40
if the female is not ready to breed, the male will treat her as another male and try to get rid of her....add more hiding spots btu i strongly suggest putting more fish with them...to get the male's attention instead of focusing on the female( i keep a bunch of swordtails with mines)
Tassilo Schwendtke » posted 2007/09/13 - 11:38
Ok. But what do you mean the female s not ready? They ve bred before. Nd I dnt really want to put other fish, so they can breed..

Tassilo mines breed like crazy in a community tank( and i have a colony of maybe 15 rainbows in my 75)to get them to spawn you need to ``condition `` them by feeding high protein food( like frozen brine shrimps or mysis)so the female can produce eggs..mines also breed more after a water change and a little raise of temp...good luck

also ,i think that having other fish with them reinforce the pair`s bond.

Seriously? But then once they breed what to do with the other fish if you don't want the eggs to be eaten? But if i just feed normal food how long will it take for the female to "get ready"? My dad told i should seperate them for a while, nd then later on they ll get closer.. Cause that special protein food i cant get here in Sri Lanka where i live!!!

Tassilo, what do you feed them at the moment...putting them alone wont help...mines breed better in compagny of other fishes( but the survival of the youngs decreases) i raise the youngs in another tank

rainbows are mainly vegetarians but they need a little more protein for breeding( maybe a good bran of flakes, shrimp pellets or freeze dried shrimps or krill would help)

Chuck, I just feed ormal pellet things... But then once they lay the eggs what do you do? Get the other fish out of the tank or what? I also feed them a bit of flakes sometimes.. Or what i did now is put a glass in the middle of the tank to seperate them... Is that ok? Cause I don' want to many fish cause the tank isn'tthat big.

i let them spawn in the community tank and just before the fry are free swimming, i siphon them out and raise them in another, separated tank...thats my method...otherwise in my tank ,the youngs disappears in about 4 -5 days

Chuck, what do you mean? when they re already off the rock or wherever the eggs were laid? And the parents don't do anything? But won't the babies be harmed? So instead of puttin the other fish somewher els u move the parents and babies? Oh, nd how do you know when the female is ready? I think i ll just wait till it's ready.. But like when you leave the "once couple" together could the female be harmed really badly or even die or just be annoyed a bit?
THE chuck » posted 2007/09/14 - 16:31
Tassilo yes, when the babys are freeswimming ,usually 2-3 days after eggs being laid...and yes, the parents will defend them....i only move the babys not the parents ...a female is ready when in breeding dress( bright ocre yellow, no vertical bars, shiny eyes and her genital papilla extends, swollen belly due to eggs)about the agressive abit of your male, i never noticed that among my colony...males are usually aggros with other males and the same occurs among the females...very important to provide them with an appropriate spawning site...a smooth flat rock or a kind of flat piece of wood will do
THE chuck » posted 2007/09/14 - 16:35
i mean i siphon the babys BEFORE they are freeswimming ,usually 2 days after hatching....when you only see a small pinkish mooving mass of fry in a pit dug by the pair( i siphon them , pour them in a little plastic comtainer that i let float in the tank to keep the temp right until they are freeswimming, after i transfer to rearing tank.....
