I have never raised mouthbrooders myself. I am attempting to get pairs now. I am wantinf to watch the whole process myself. I don't know when to move her or the fry. You can buy feeder foods for new born. Brine shrimp or really fine flakes. They have one called First Bite I think is correct. Josh sometimes Mr. C is very busy and it takes awhile but usually very helpful... You might look on some sites on the internet and get help. Good luck..

I always take my female (Acei) out about a week before she releases the fry and put her into a 10 gallon, thenabout a week after she releases,I put her back in the big tank,Iused first bites for about 2-weeks,then crused up flake food. She is holding another batch now.

Mark, how do you keep her from spitting them when you try to catch her?
Mark & Kathy Lindamood » posted 2007/11/01 - 20:22
Roger she is pretty relaxed with me,almost like she knows, but I have found with her, that she will protect at all cost, and she not going to spit the fry out till she feels safe,I go slow when i go into the tank after her,and I also wait a couple of hours after the light has been turned off,and leave it off while netting her,I turn a small lamp on,she is kinda asleep I quess you could say.Worked the last 3-times.

The only reason I do is the afra will have a good feast, and the red zebra.

M&K, would you reccomend this approach to a first time mom fish? What if she spits while catching her a week early? Will/could the fry still survive if she doesn't take them back in?

bip, can't really say,it worked the first time with her, might not with somebody else or another fish, one option might be plastic eggcrate from lowes or hardware store, cut to fit and make atank divider for her seperating her from the other fish, the fry will stay with her and close.
