Silver Gar? Rocket Gar? Can anyone tell?
Silver Gar? Rocket Gar? Can anyone tell?
Trying to figure out the ID of this fish I have. It hangs out like a barruda. It is compatible with my geo's and green severen and silver dollar.

Have no idea what sort of gar it is but it definately isn't compatible with geo's or severums, should take them apart in no time.

true tonya...slunt(or slant)-nosed gar...a characin...i had a school of 4...i use to keep them with a big male brasiliensis, never had any trouble!i would not see any problem with geos, severums and silver$

Could start another s@#tfight here but Chuck,Bras's are more than capable of looking after themselves, especially mature ones.I don't know f all about gars but don't they have some major denture work and can get quite aggresive.

so far, this gar is totally compatible. it rarely does much other than hang out on the top area of the tank. My silver dollar and sererum are more aggressive. and yea, he needs some dental work.

well these ones arent agressive like most other gars, pikes etc.. they are smaller will eat small fish no doubt about that but sevs and geos noway

I need to report to you guys that this gar actually ate all my tetras. Granted my tetras were just the start up fish I put in when i first had the tank so I didn't care too much. But I watched this gar hunt and eat about 6-7 tetras over a course of a week or so. Oddly I haven't seen this gar eat the food I put in. I guess it likes live fish....the gar doesnt bother anyone else though. only the smaller fish as was stated or else I would be pissed.

I think it is a Ctenolucius hujeta.

first off its not a gar. its a characin. you can tell because it has one more fin than gars. and its a silver gar and a rocket gar. it has many names. Gets about 3 ft in the wild, but in normal house hold aquariums it stays 5-14 inches

they are compatible with severums. unless the severums start attacking it, which is doubtful.

yes it likes live fish. do you buy fish without knowing what they eat, or what kind of fish it is? you can train it to eat floating turtle pellets or hikari sticks, but its a fish primarily.
