Pseudotropheus greshakei
Sadly two days ago, for no apparent reason overnight a whole batch of fry, which i was going to sell this weekend, sadly died ... all 17 :( could anyone give me a reason why they might have died. The adults are fine and similarly the other batch of 35 younger fry are all fine aswell. If this helps i was keeping them in a breeder net, no adults could have done this as there were no signs of external damage or white spot any other disease! Thankyou all ... :(

bummer josh . water parameters ok ? nitrate, nitrites , ph ?

theres nothing wrong with the water, i checked all of that and all the other fish are fine. I thought it could have been an algae growing on the fry trap net but i threw that away just in case that was the problem. It could have also been a disease that they all got within an enclosed space??

harvick, thats kinda what i was gettin at also, only thing thats weird is the fact that theirs other fish in the tank. just seems like if it was water chemistry it would effect the others.....i think ima hit the books on this one.

justin laroche » posted 2008/04/09 - 12:48
what were you feeding them?
Josh Callaghan » posted 2008/04/09 - 12:49
if you can see it in the background the net i was keeping them in is there, the one with the shell in. this is quite an old pic now but by the time i removed the net it was light green and brown from algae??
Josh Callaghan » posted 2008/04/09 - 12:49
but i just thought that was normal as it grows on rocks and everything??
justin laroche » posted 2008/04/09 - 12:50
i would think if it was algae growing on the net, the other fish would have eaten it also.
Josh Callaghan » posted 2008/04/09 - 12:50
just ordinary cichlid flakes Justin the same as the parents just crushed up!
justin laroche » posted 2008/04/09 - 12:52

justin laroche » posted 2008/04/09 - 13:03
hmmm, its not the best food in the world, but it shouldnt have killed the babies. i had some food give a batch of fry bloat one time thats why i was askin......man im almost clueless on this one. but im callin a buddy right now, and going through all the books i have.

oh, how about temp. whats it like?
Josh Callaghan » posted 2008/04/09 - 13:04
cheers man!! it will help prevent it if it might occur again!!
Josh Callaghan » posted 2008/04/09 - 13:06
temp is always 25C (dont know farrenheight) it doesn't rele change and all the things in my tank were working!!
Josh Callaghan » posted 2008/04/09 - 13:09
it could just be 'one of those things' that we'll never be able to work out. i always check with my lfs before i put something in or change the food or anything! but justin how much do you sell your greshakei fry for either privately or to your lfs??
Vince Cooper » posted 2008/04/09 - 13:14
The algae may have blocked water flow & kept raw ammonia inside the net.
Josh Callaghan » posted 2008/04/09 - 13:16
that could be it that would have killed them ... cheers Justin thats probably it... wont buy those again!!
Josh Callaghan » posted 2008/04/09 - 13:19
thanks vince great explanation!!
justin laroche » posted 2008/04/09 - 13:44
sorry for the slow response, i usually sell them for about $4-$5 each at 2 inch, and the lfs usually gives me about $2 each, but when they buy they take the whole group so it works out
Meagan Howe » posted 2008/04/09 - 16:20

i go with vince great idea, legendary.. .when i had a fry net i had to clean it reg from the algae now i have the clear box.. the adults would rip hole trying to get the fry to eat ,buggers... the tropical flakes may have helped to as the are high in fat and protein right.. get some vego flakes for cichlids.hope the rest are are great and you get good money ....
