My Convic got beat up and lost an eye. It's been about 3 weeks and now it looks as if it is infected. It has a white fuzzy looking something on it and he has lost scales or something. Any tips?

That's a tough one man. My convict got thrashed by my JD once. He got so stressed out he got fin rot. I had to put him in a different tank by himself and I medicated him with MELAFIX. It took about a month before he got back to his old self. I don't know about the eye though. I would definitely get him in a separate tank and start medicating him though.

Let me play the Devil's advocate. Put it out of it's misery and get yourself a new one. Convicts are common.

I agree with Jerry, especially if you try to help him back to better health; he may never be the same and that will have to be your call...

I really hate letting fish go. It's not fare to them but he is to lively right to get the flush. I am not some evil person but I think I will go ahead and leave him in the same tank and if my other cichlids take him out then thats that and if he lives then thats that...lol...

ok..or put him in a small 2.5gl/5gl/10gl and try to nurse him back w/ some melafix..can go but these for $10 or so and worth the try. It is more humane to do this than let him be bait in a bigger tank....just my opinion.

I agree with ***Jamie***. Put it in another tank or get a cheap 10 gallon and put some Metafix in it. If that doesn't help then move to an anti biotic. Don't kill the fish as alot of fish live normal health lives with just one eye.

I agree 100 % Jamie... If you care enough to get them, then care enough to treat them.. These fish are a gift from God.

If you have a small hospital tank, you may want to try and treat him with Binox. This is a very strong med., but does a great job....

Jeremiah-don't want to send mixed signals...we know he is hurt and badly, the worst you can do is let him suffer; but, if he has a chance, do what many have said and put in his own small tank, treat and go from there. Yes, cons are plentiful, but somethings are last resort...also, you will learn along the way on how to care for sick fish and if it ever happens again, you know what to do! I do agree with Jerry, but at least try to nurse him back first.

I couldn't be bothered reading the other posts, so this may have already been advised. Melafix would be a good place to start, just be sure to relocate the fish into quarrentine. The larger the tank, the better ofcourse. No excitment.

Leaving him in with the healthy fish would only cause him to suffer more. The healthy and strong prey on the sick and weak. If you want to save him, you need to isolate him, and treat him. Good luck.

I agree with trying to treat him in his own hospital tank. I have a comp. with one eye that was lost in a fight and he is as fiesty as ever. Please don't leave him in with the other fish for many reasons, but mostly because it is unfair to him and if he has a fungal/bacterial infection it could make the other fish sick if they are even slightly sick

Why did he get beat up. Is there anything you can do about the agression ?
