Looks like a Pseudotropheus sp " Elongatus Mbenji Brown" Can’t say for sure though but very similar if not.
James Martin » posted 2007/12/14 12:46 pm
To Ashley and Michael: The Usisya and Mbenji brown are very close in appearence. Mbenjii browns are an extremely uncommon import. Usisyas are more commonly seen as they are being bred commercially in florida. A dominant usisya is indeed a much more yellow fish, however its subdominant color is very similiar to the fish here. In all species of cichlid there is some variation from fish to fish. I have kept "usisyas" before and my subdominant males were identical to this fish, white tippped fins and all. There is a good pic in Ad Konings "Malawi Cichlids in Their Natural Habitat" 2nd ED. PG 120. I'm not saying it can't be a Mbenji brown, But they are so rarely seen in stores it is much more likely to be a usisya.

James that makes this a Pseudotropheus Sp. Right. If so Patty will be thrilled. I showed her the pic. She said let me look and thats what she cameup with.

Roger Hopper (m) » posted 2007/12/14 08:33 pm
James. could you confirm this for Patty, I want to make her day.Please. Is it a psuedotropheus sp. Thanks for your help..:)
James Martin » posted 2007/12/15 02:31 pm
It's a toss up beween Elongatus "mbenji brown" or Elongatus "Usisya".
When the fish is excited is it more yellow than this? if it is then itis a "usisya". I
If it is more brown with darker barring then it is a "mbenji brown". That is the best answer I can give you.

James I would like to know if those fish are psuedotropheus sp.'s
James Martin » posted 2007/12/15 05:14 pm
Yes they are a "true" Pseudotropheus species.
Roger Hopper (m) » posted 2007/12/15 05:17 pm
Thanks James, she looked it up and will be thrilled to know that is what it is. I have a book that shows the lighter colors on one. It only lists it as a P. Sp...
