Cichlid Storm » posted 2007/05/01 - 07:43
where did you see them?
joel durbridge » posted 2007/05/01 - 07:44
at the fish shop in adelaide, they were $70 aus each for a baby
Cichlid Storm » posted 2007/05/01 - 07:45
thats way over priced for a kitumba, they should be in the 12-15.00 for 1.5"
joel durbridge » posted 2007/05/01 - 07:46
really, are they a special/rare fish
Cichlid Storm » posted 2007/05/01 - 07:47
no, 3rd most common frontosa
joel durbridge » posted 2007/05/01 - 07:49
in aus they are pretty expensive for some reason, for a normal one you pay $50aus
Cichlid Storm » posted 2007/05/01 - 07:49
i would tell them you know what they are worth and are willing to pay that and nothing more.

What's the 2nd most common front variant, Mpimbwe? (I'm presuming burundi's are the most common). BTW, the 7-bar variants are Kigoma, not Kitumba.
Frank Shortt » posted 2007/05/01 - 16:13
So how can you tell the difference between the Mpinbwe and the Burundi's. Is it just color or are there other ways.
Cichlid Storm » posted 2007/05/01 - 16:23
There are both here Kay, I had Kitumba that would throw both, skinny bar are Kigoma, wide bar Kitumba. And crap i thought i had posted that, no the 3 most common are Kavalla, Kapampa, and Kitumba or 7 bar.
Cichlid Storm » posted 2007/05/01 - 16:46
come to think of it Kay, about a year ago I had Kavalla that would give me 2-3 each brood which had 7 bars, they used to do that pretty regular, I should have kept them and raised them for breeding..lol would have had 7 bar Kavalla..lol

Frank, in addition to coloration differences, the burundi's have a vertical eye-bar, while mpimbwe's typically have a 'mask' (similar to the moba's in the above photo), meaning there's a horizontal band which 'connects' both eyes.

Thanks Kay Bee. I want to add about two more to my tank and want to make sure they are the same.
Kay Bee19 » posted 2007/05/01 - 17:03
Kigoma's (and the much rarer Boulomboro and Bujumbura variants) are the only 7-stripe variants. 7 stripes seen in all other variants, especially the southern 'Gibberosa' types, at best should be considered an anomaly.
Kay Bee19 » posted 2007/05/01 - 17:07
I guess routine availability of frontosa variants varies with what area you live in (burundi's and kigoma's are typically the only variants seen in LFS in my area). I wish they sold moba's like your's Mr. C!
Cichlid Storm » posted 2007/05/01 - 17:28
They are readily available here Kay if you know where to look, where abouts are you?
