Wow, love these. I have never seen them around here. How is their temperment?
Tang O' » posted 2008/04/20 - 19:49
they are extremely peaceful bip
James Martin » posted 2008/04/20 - 19:51
They are peaceful until the male decides it's time to breed....then they go completely mental and attack everything in the tank (personal exp.) Still anice fish though. They just need a big tank (100+ gallons)

Thanks Tang. Can the different color variations be kept together? Who would make good tank mates? Also I heard they don't keep their gorgeous colors all the time, just mostly when in breeding mode, is that true?

Thanks to you as well Esox. When you say 100gal+.... I have the 130gal that will eventually be set up for tangs, that is big enough to have some of these guys and other species right?

I've kept a number of different types of these fish (ventralis "chaitika" nasutus "kipilli gold" and boops) They need a big open space in order to dig their pit for spawning in captivity they keep the color most of the time, but you don't want to put them in with any "nippy" fish (tropheus, small lamps etc.) as the beautiful ventrals will get clipped eventually. Maybe some Xenotilapia, Julies, Cyprichromis, etc. Set them up like any mouthbrooder (more Females than males). Not as delicate as they look they are fairly durable in my exp.

calvus also go well with them, i also agree with the xenotilapia and cyps, don't know about the julies though.

Thanks a bunch guys!

Calvus will be fine. The julies are good because they stay close to the rocks, and have very small territories. They provide a bit of contrast and color.
