Mr Cichlids.. since you no the melanochromis species so well, would you be able to post the ones you have and explain the diff. Would be nice to learn.
no Kay, the male is the only darkened fish in the tank, notice the spots...as for Wazza, let me get photo's of all of them and gladly I will post them, and explain anything you folks would like to know about them.
actually no kay, the cyan. isn't technically classified as that anymore, it belongs to the Elec blue family, but these are Wild Johannii, I do have some Cyan., I can show you later today, ill get you a couple good photo's of them when I go down to feed them.
For clarification this is how it is: melanochromis johanni (common name 'johanni'), dimorphic species with yellow females. Melanochromis cyanerhabdos (common name 'electric blue johanni' & 'maingano'), monomorphic species with blue females. The fish in this pic are m. cyan, especially if wild caught, no doubt about it. Mr. Cichlids has the species descriptions reversed.
KB, let me show you a (Female Elec Blue Johannii, watch for the new posting. As you will see, her colors are changing to black and blue already. and she was brood from a common Electric Blue Johannii (Melanochromis Johannii)
The maingano (m. cyan) are not hybrids and don't produce yellow females. When the fish in this pic produce fry and they're all born blue-ish, that confirms they're m. cyan (all m. johanni's are born yellowish, all m. cyan. are born blue-ish).
Cool fish but Tang O' is right he'll be a Nice snack for the frontosa,
