Well that's provided it's actually a johanni. Both M. johanni and interruptus have blue males and yellow females but m. cyaneorhabdos have blue females and males. It looks to be a male johanni, but the real test is if he was ever yellow since juvies are yellow as well. How long have you had him?

I have had him now for about 2 months..I have had cichlids now for about 2 years..theres just such a variety in coloration you don't normally get from fresh water fish..maybe hes 3 or so inch..

Okay due to size and the fact you have only had him for 2 months (didn't see the juvie phase). I am going to say he's most likely a johanni. Look at this profile for pics:

I've found female johanni to be hard to find in my area (because most "johanni" are cyaneorhabdos here not johanni) maybe your LFS can order some in.

I have a tanzanian (yellow) female but I live all the way in Mich. Melanochromis Johanni are very common. Not worth the drive or the shipping cost to send her to you.

If you are interested in breeding, perhaps you should try something a little more rare. While they may be pricey, strawberry peacocks are all the rage now. They go for about $40 @ 2", up to a hundred for mature adults ready to breed. I just picked up seven of them for my store. I'll be posting pics this week.

Also, if you want to add females, you need to add more than one, especially with Johanni's. They're kinda hard on their humps (pardon my french)
