i bought this jack about 2 months ago. he/she? is roughly 4 inches long. there is not much for color changes, other than a bit of green forming on his/her gill plate. but no distinct blues or greens on random scales. is this jack a hybrid?...any ideas? thanks :)

stress is always a factor in any tank but, when i bought him from the retailer he was still very much the same color...i dont know:) thx for your thoughts

by stress i meant unusuall stress like more dominant bigger, more agro fish, not enuff hidind places...but light bottom does influence the fish`s color.....but the more i looks at it, the more i think that theres some rainbow cichlid in this fish..

thx chuck. he's is my biggest fish, and he shares a 43 gallon with 2 small golden cichlids. they dont seem to bother each other. but would you recommend and different bottom color or even a different bottom(sand)? thx for all your insight

i was looking at your rainbows and thought there was some features in my jack that could possibly by a hybrid. it's pretty much a guessing game i guess.

Why did you buy it?

it is a Jack Dempsey. Not a hybrid, just stress out, if you going to provide acceptable living condition in your tank and wait awhile it will color up.

ok thanks...i'll see what i can do and post another pic in 2/4 weeks...maybe i'll remove the 2 other fish into a different tank, and give my jack his entire space. my ph level is good, water quality is great. i could add another cave or two...just him and pleco should be fine in a 43 gallon? i'm looking at the better tank to house him in once he's larger. i hope he perks up.

i was goin to say its a white dempsey. the store by me has a few. look just like that one and its not a hybrid, just a white gene dempsey. look it up on google, you will find them .

43 is fine...and yes, more natural colors for the gravel will improve fish`s color...brown looks good

i saw white jacks before....but i would have said it if i tought it was one....the white jacks i saw does not carry the dark stripe and the gill plate looks pink coz of lack of dark pigments( you see the gills throu it)...but it can be one..im not an expert of all morphs of dempseys

yea come to think of it i think your right, i dont remember seeing the strips on the ones i seen at the store. hmmmm i dunno then.
