I keep one Jd in a 40gal. tank by himself, what is the other fish in your pic? I hope my pic comes through. Should I give him some company or leave him alone ? He seems happy and I would hate to stress him out!

Teddy, the other fish is a Amphilophus Calobrensis. There is also a Red Tiger Mota,C. Kraussii and female festae in with him. They are in a 75 gal and the Festae will be coming out before too long.

As long as the JD is the most dominant it will do fine

If your JD is 5"+ and is used to being alone. It may be impossible to add anoter fish as he most likly considers all 40 gallons his territory. If you try it be prepared to remove the new fish quickly.
