I belive this is a Male JD because of the lenght and color but can any one tell me why my JDS stay black all of the time?

Need a pic of the side of the head- gill plate for sexing these....

If it has alot of blue around the bottom of the gill plate it is a girl - Girls look like they have on blue blush (i'll post one) As far as being black - he may just have a bad attitude or is ready for spawning.
