ICH!!! Please help
ICH!!! Please help
In my 10 years of fish keeping I have NEVER had an ich outbreak. I check my fish daily for any problems, yesterday morning all was well. Came home from work last night, ich breakout. Mostly on the 3 clown loaches, but seeing some spots on Hap. ruby, and my blue regal. I treated the water last night with ich medications and increased the temp in the tank. I have managed to catch 1 of the clown loaches so far and put in separate 10 gal tank that I am also treating. Any suggestions? I don't want to lose my fish.

DO NOT USE MEDS!!!!! Raise temp to 86º and add a couple table spoons of aquarium salt. Leave the temp at 86º for a week or two.

Clowns are very susceptible to ick. Don't remove them from your tank as this will increase the stress on them and drasicaly decrease their ability to fight it.

Michelle, I don't have them for that reason. They are said to be open for the ick disease. Meds can kill the scaleless fish. There is one if you can find it that only says a couple fish are a danger. I think it is called Cure Ick..

Hmmm...Sick fish...I lost my darn large Convict last night ! Smaller is alive but no evidence as to why he would have died. No markings on him nor is there a sickness in my tank...
:( Not sure why or how but it happened ! I got the "curse" of dieing fish for the last week...Hmmm....Gonna half to cry if they don't stop dieing on me !

Michelle, use Rid-Ich by Kordon follow directions on bottle. Raise temp. do 25% water changes everyday before adding med. I have five clowns loaches and it has always work for me, when I did not quarantine new fish and got ick. It's alot of work but worth it.

April - somethig is wrong or unstable with your water. You need to test it ASAP.

Meds can kill your good bacteria. There is absolutly no reason to use them as thay can cause more harm than good.

So do you all think I should get rid of the clown loaches? I was afraid if I left them in the tank, the fish that hadn't been affected yet, would be. Also I am suppose to get an order of new fish on Sunday, I need to cancel this order and not add anything new until this is under control right/

No Michelle don't get rid of them and don't cancel new fish. Just slowly raise the temp to 86º and add some aquarium salt.

raise temp michelle as it brings the ick out faster to kill it so there will be more first as it appears but then it will all die.. it stays dorminate in cooler water.. there are directions for tanks with loaches in them , half the normal dose..i added a new fish a while ago ,a clown loach and it put ick inmy tank.. treated it with white spot medication aqua one brand one treament all gone a week later.. water goes blue from it but it never affected all my fish and my loaches are bigger and better than ever so it never killed them .. i hate to disagree with arron but salt has no anitbiotict qualities .. i have just read a huge article about it by ad knonings.. was talking to bloop about it.. it helps fish heal but cant cure infections.. i can email you the article if you like..

You don't add salt to cure the infection, you add it because ick can't multiply in it's presence.

Ick is under the fishes scales (and yes loaches have very small scales they are not scaleless) The 86º temp makes the ick run threw it's life cycle very fast. At the end of the life cycle the ick detaches from it's host (your loach) where it multiplies in your water and finds a new host. (this is how ick spreads from one fish to another) You add salt because when the ick is detached from it's host it won't multiply and will die if the correct level of salt is present in you water. There are numerous articles on this all over the net and it's worked great for me and it won't hurt your fish, won't hurt your good bacteria or turn your tank blue.

Google "Ick and Salt"

thank you for adding all that aaron .. now it makes sense.. i was reading there are two strains of ick and one is harder to get rid of and you need med.. i always add some good bacteria to the water after i use medication too.. :-)

Wow michelle, IDK you had an ick issue too. i had a break out less than 2 days ago, and it got worse, after the salt treatment didnt work, so i talked to roger, and decided to try meds. today its all but gone. if you are using med make sure its safe for scaled and scale"less" fish...hope it all goes well. if ya have yahoo messenger..send me ur ID.
