he is going to be something, I love Loisellie

Thanks Alex. Sometimes I feel like he looks plain .. not a ton of yellow like I've seen on some. Does this come later, or does it vary in the species? He is growing fast though, and is very active. Not too aggressive, but when antagonized, he shows who is boss.

Frank, it is two type of Loiselli cichlid. From Panama and Nicaragua.
They vary in size, coloration and aggression level.
Did you see picture of my adult male?
michael diaz » posted 2008/04/10 - 21:10
Alex,I forgot to tell you my cousin in Nicaragua has these and some other cichlids in his tank and the best part they are all wild..

*Frank>
Nicaragua loissellei - usually comes from Jeff Rapps - have a much deeper body, the male is almost black, while the female is yellow.
And Panama loisselie is the bad azz one

Panama loissellei are very long bodied, and the males are almost as yellow as the females,

Yeah your male looks awesome - one of the reasons I picked Loisellei in the first place to be honest. Before this site, I had never heard of them. This one is supposedly F1 of a WC pair from Honduras. Bought him from Rapps. You think he will turn out like your male? That would be sweet.

My male looks similar but still different from what I see today in the hobby, it's been around 10 y ago.
I can not be sure, if it turns exactly like mine, but in good care, they all beautiful in a different way. If I only have extra space man, I would grab one!
Frank, one thing to consider is that Loisellie opposite to JD or Jaguar, gets more and more agro with age, and the size they attain is.. lets say in one word "BIG"
75 gal very bare minimum.
See this short video (Panama loisellie)

*Frank, I copy ur question here, so you wont loose my answer on some one else post, here it is your question:
-------------------------------------
Alex, let me know how that works out. A 110 is the biggest I can go because of wall space as well, and I'm interested to get feedback on something that doesnt need HOB or hoses out the back - so I can keep it tight to the wall. Sounds like a sweet setup. Does a drilled tank/wet dry cost much more than a traditional tank & appropriate filters?
------------------------------------
Answer here bellow:
------------
drilled tank with build in overflow box and kit to connect box to the dry/wet filter under the tank cost $100 more for me, often dif is more then this.
Stand cost the same.
Then you need to consider that WET/DRY filter is costly to buy, unless you buy used or do DIY. $200 plus for 75 gal plus tank then media.
But beneficial part is that filter easy to maintain and cheaper to run, and it suits better for large fish like cichlids
It is also noisier then most canister filters like Eheim.
HTH,
Alex

Are those both Loisellei? The male is like double the size of the female! I was hoping I just had a passive one and lucked out :) LOL I'll keep an eye out on the aggression of course. He's in a 72g with tankmates now, but this may be a great reason to add another tank in the future - perhaps a 110 or 90, for the existing group, and I can do another small community in the 72. :)

Thanks for the tank info Alex. I may look into this if I get another setup.

yeah, Frank, they both Loisellie, male and female. In Parachromis species, often male considerably larger then female, with little exceptions.
Frank Donato » posted 2008/04/11 - 02:22
Too bad I didn't get a female. She'd fit nicely in my tank. This big boy is going to cost me either money or fish one day :)
Alex Odesit » posted 2008/04/11 - 03:56
Loisellie female not as colorful.
If you want colorful female from similar species of Parachromis family, get Fredi female, they are very nice looking when adult, not too agro as well, if not breeding.

No room for more fish, but if I get another tank, I'd like to try a Freddy. I had one once years ago, but only for a short time - my old roommate picked him up from a LFS at about 5", but he was too nasty to stay in the tank.
Alex Odesit » posted 2008/04/11 - 05:02
really?? Fredy is usually one of the calmest of all Parachromis. Surprise for me
Frank Donato » posted 2008/04/11 - 05:06
Well, let me also mention that I was a 23 year old single guy, who was more interested in maintaining a buzz than maintaining a clean tank - so maybe he/she was just mad at the conditions. I've learned lots since then about both fish and booze :)
