Help!
My 2-year-old really wanted a fish so we recenty (today) purchased the cichlid shown in this picture. Does anyone know if the black spots should be a concern? If so, what should we do to keep "Nemo" swimming and our son giggling? Also, does anyone know what type of cichlid this might be? It was purchased at a large discount store, so I'm sure it is nothing special but it would be nice to know what it is. Thanks!

Hard to tell without seeing the rest of him. From the head looks like a red zebra, could be cross bred though. Cute lil guy

Red zebra (metriaclima estherae). As far as keeping it alive and well, click the link on beginner guides and read up on cycling a tank.

What size tank?

My fish will occasionally develop a black spot here and there. I always attributed it to stress. It happens most often to new fish introduced to the tank. Or fish that aren't eating. Not sure of the pathophysiology though. Usually it goes away when the cause is determined.

How long has this tank been setup? If you bought the tank and fish today, this fish will see a lot of stress because he will be aiding the tank in its nitrogen cycle and will be subject to ammonia and nitrites. If this is the case then I suggest doing at least 30-40% water changes a few times a week. I am assuming you are a beginner in the hobby, so you definitely have a little homework to do.

Tank size is very important as well. African cichlids have much different requirements in comparison to other tropical fish. Most mbuna require a tank of at least 55 gallons with at least a 48" footprint.

I agree - red zebra. And some have spots on them naturally. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.
This fish will eventually reach a respectable 5" and be quite aggressive - so it should be housed in a fairly large tank with tankmates similiar to itself. But even if kept as a singleton - it should be given at least a 20 gal tank.
Mbuna love hiding spots as you see - and love veggies - so dont feed a diet high in protein. Keep the ph abit high 7.6 - 7.8 and you'll have a friend who could live a nice ripe old age of 15-20 years!
Good luck!
