Help! Holding...now what?...
Help! Holding...now what?...
Metriaclima estherae
Hi All...My Red Zebra OB is holding. This is my first time with a holding fish. I can see the eggs in her mouth. The problem is that the only fish that I've seen trying to breed with her is my Dogtooth cichlid. He's been at it for 3 days! So, chances are that the fry will be hybrid/mutts. I was very suprised to read posts on other forums where people recommended not taking the mom from the tank and letting her release the fry into the main tank and let them be lunch because they are not full breed. I know it is very important to keep the integrity of all breeds. But the lunch recommendation purposely seems so barbarack. Has anyone else been in this situation? If so...what did you do?
Thanks

No Scott...no other OB's...I have a male & female Red Zebra and a juvie Cobalt Blue Zebra. I've recently seen the male Red trying to mate with the female Red, but nothing has happened. The dogtooth has been trying with the OB for a few days now...and now I see eggs...is it safe to assume?

I think it is not safe to assume, it could easily be that the red zebra male got 5 minutes with her and that was enough. I would say move her into another tank and let her release in there, grow out the babies and then find out what happened lol.

Thanks Tang. I'd imagine that the Dogtooth blues and purples will show up early enough to know if he is the daddy. Hopefully it is the male Red. Is it still a full breed if a Red Zebra OB and a male Red Zebra produce?

if u got a male red in there...chances are it did infact mate wit the female.....but even if not dont just kill the babies....they might look real nice u never know...plus who cares if there hybrids.....some humans are lolololololol...they dont get killed

Thanks Ferdinand O. Why is it a good chance that the OB mated with the male Red? Do they tend to stick to their own? Because the male Red has shown no interest...... Also, I've decided to keep the fry. Hopefully they look good. Why do you suggest stripping?

Hi All! Mom is doing well in her holding tank away from the group. I plan on stripping her next week. (first timer...wish me luck) My children are so excited! As adults, we understand reproduction, although all living things reproduce differently, we have a good understanding of it. This is amazing to my kids. They have no general understanding of reproduction. And they way the cichlids breed is so innocent, I can fully explain to them the way its done, without getting into "the bird and the bee's" so to speak. I'll let ya'll know how I make out.
