Are you sure this is a female? Also, I'd skip the 100 and go straight to a 200+ tank for this - you'll need it. He/she is a beaut. And Dovii are a bit skiddish and shy until the get to about 10" or so.

and, do you think its male, i was told when i bought it it was a she, because the male was beating her up

I hear ya. I bought mine used. There is usually someone around your area with a big tank that just wants it out of their way. I'm not sure if it's male or female. I have always thought that the strong lateral line meant male. From what you have said I would guess the two Dovii were male and fighting for territory. You probably have a male here.

i just looked it up on the net and it said this--->Females are smaller than the male and the red pigment seems more prominent in the gill plates. The red colouration is significantly prominent in the female in breeding colours. The male's dorsal and ventral fins are also much more extended and elongated than the female's.

I believe the above is refering to adult Dovii but I could be wrong I'm definently not an expert on them. There are others on here such as Alex O. that would know better than me.

Harry this is a female all the way. My dovii is smaller and about 4 inches. Males begin when younger than yours to start to get spots very small all over the body. Mine was getting these at 2 inches. Males also have this spotting on the fins and tail. Yours doesn't. Mine also has alot of blue and green in the fins and face if you want i can take a picture of mine now to show you. Males also get a square body shape and not streamlined like the females. The best i can describe what i just said is that mine at 3-4 inches got a square head which is typical of this species. hope this helps. Female.

Harry one more thing as the males get bigger they actually loose the black line on the sides.

hey you never know. i bred Dovii once and they were really good parents until the male just flipped out and ate the eggs and then killed the female in a matter of 1.5 hours.

Lol!!! If I ever had the chance I'd love to get a 500 gallon with a male Dovii and 5 full grown tin foil barbs. Maybe someday :)
