Big Fish is doing a little better..
Big Fish is doing a little better..
Well here's poor Big Fish. His eyes have gotten better with a week of melafix. He is coming out more, only to eat after everyone else is done. But he is very skiddish now. When he sees me walking to the tank he goes back and hides. All of the fish are skiddish ever since they got treated. Does anyone know why they hide and how long it will last? I almost think they are mad at me for medicating them all, lol.

This could be caused from poor water quality, its usually the first thing you look for. Just try doing a water change, and add some fresh water!

Yeah I think the water is what caused it. I was gone for a couple months and my better half never took care of it. We changed the water twice in the last 3 weeks The first time we did a 50% change, took the carbon out, and began medicating the tank with melafix. After a week I did about a 30% change and put new carbon and floss in the filter. Fish seem to be thriving more, but my nitrate levels are still thru the roof. No idea what to do but to keep changing the water.

yes, you have to have the good bacteria, you can keep doing 10 percent water changes, that might help some. Do you have any well established tanks, you could take some of the media from there, and place into your new tank, or you can try placing some of substrate from another well established tank, and try placing it into this one. The bacteria will grow as well that way. I alwyas use stability, or some cycle.

Also, you said that he is really skiddish, well thats because he cannot see you, except for shadows, and that makes them nervous.

Depending on what kind of sand you get, be sure to wash it really well bef
