Roger Hopper » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:13
Robert I looked at blowup of this one. He looks like a Iceberg Fryeri. The barring and markings on his sides and the lighter anal fin.
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:16
i was Told it was a Blue Ahli when i bought him but anybody have an opinion thnks for pointing that out
BLooP BLooP » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:22
that is correct...look at my guy...hes almost the same...
Roger Hopper » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:24
Robert it is hard to explain but they are the same. They were called haplochromis Ahli, or electric blue Ahli, they then reclassified them as a scieanichromis Fryeri. From what I can find they are 1 in the same. They change the names all the time. Frontosa's have had 6 different names since in the books. Confused yet?
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:30
umm a lil do u know more about this like maybe talk on email or if u have aim im new to cichlids and wanna learn?
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:31
here is a few more sciaenochromis fryeri, haplochromis ahli, haplochromis electric blue, haplochromis jacksoni.. very very confusing..
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:34
lol thnks make me more confused love it!!! haha anybody got any tips on soome good fish to go with him? im starting a new tank he is in the quarantine tank and is going into a 55 with two yellow labs right now but i wanted some peacocks any other suggestions?
BLooP BLooP » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:35
Moorrii's also were classified as haplochromis, now they are...Cyrtocara moorii
Roger Hopper » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:43
Robert as long as you stay away from the more aggressive mbuna's they do well with most mildly aggressive malawi's. Word of warning, they are the layboys of lake malawi, as well. They will breed with most haps and peacocks. Moori Dolphins would be fine, and beautiful. Acei's Borlleyi's they like to group though.
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:44
you have to watch electric blues in the wild they eat small fish as there diet .i have found mine with a moori hanging out his mouth...
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:46
roger What color would it come out if he bred with an ob peacock? Kylie thnks for the heads up
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:50
a very preety hybrid.. i would say robert.. i have a girl electric blue and mine dont even look her hardly ...
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:52
mi would love to see that wat are the markings for the female ob's?
Roger Hopper » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:57
I am not sure but some OB's have the electric blue on them from the peacocks. It would be very pretty. imo I am waiting to see our fruity pebbles. My strawbeery and tangerine breed. she spit 7 fry. bTo small to really tell colors.
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 06:58
btw your new peacocks that u put pics up are amazing looking
Roger Hopper » posted 2008/03/07 - 07:00
Robert the females usually have more of a rounded dorsal fin than male. The males come to a sharp point at the back of the dorsal fins.
BLooP BLooP » posted 2008/03/07 - 07:04
rob the combo that roger listed is almost exactly what i have...so rob ur not A "Mass Hole" are yah? LOL a lil NY/NJ joke i guess..if yah try to do the OB peacock thing, try and find one that is really orange..not a faded yellowy pink color.
Roger Hopper » posted 2008/03/07 - 07:11
Thanks Robert, I am going to do my 75 gal as a all male peacock show thak.. I want about 17 or 18. All different colors.

R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:12
yea idk i have a bag of play sand laying around thats why i asked but is sand a pain to clean when it comes time? Cuz i personally think sand gves the tank a better look
bip_ 4u » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:12
Great looking fish Robert....Basically they took one fish and kept renaming it, guess they got bored. Pool sand is good from what I have heard on here. Go to your home improvement store like Home Depot and look for silica sand. Silica sand is what is in my tanks. DO NOT use play sand, too dirty in my opinion, and granuals are too fine when it comes time to clean the tank.
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:12
bugger no internet .. i watch my fish in the morning and at lunch .. always with a coffee.. have to count and look for non eating fish every morning..
bip_ 4u » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:13
Depends on the sand you get as to how much cleaning of it you will have to do Robert. The silica sand I bought was really clean, I still spent a couple hours on and off cleaning and soaking it though.
bip_ 4u » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:14
Shoot keep forgetting smiles.
Marc Draper » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:14
Yeah, Ive got 2 Juvie GT's that Im keeping my eye on at the mo. But none of my fish have bothered them so far!!! Is it just Africans you keep then????
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:18
hey thnks bip i want to home depot today to look for silica sand cuz i saw it somewhere before but they didnt have any it is expensive or is it cheap?
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:18
me marc .. yes just africans.. no americans well not many for sale around me.. not super common.. i have a friend who is looking everywhere for a texas..
bip_ 4u » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:23
Robert what other home improvement stores do you have? Lowes, Scotties, Menards? Not sure which are up there, I couldn't find much at Home Depot here. Yes much much cheaper than buying sand from lfs. I paid $3.50 for a 50 lb bag of silica sand. I called a swimming pool supply place here and a bag of pool sand was $5.something for a 50lb bag, still cheaper than lfs.
Marc Draper » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:24
Where is it your from Australia???? Thats a shame but then sayin that Africans are still lovely fish!! The only one I have is a Calvus!!!
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:29
yea i have a lowes up here and some smaller ones like ace hardware. how do u suggest in washing the sand out to make it suitable for the tank tho i cant really think of a way ?
bip_ 4u » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:39
I took an 18 gallong rubbermaid storage container, set it in the tub, poured the sand in, filled the container half way with water and used my hands to stir up the sand over and over, drained it and did it all again. Like shampooing, wash rinse repeat, lol. (I took a clean glass (made sure no soap residue was on it), and scooped up some of the water and held it to the light to see how cloudy it still was or wasn't)
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:42
wow good thinking lol never would of thought of that now i have to spend my day running around to get sand tomorrow i wanna have this tank started cycling by sat night or sunday
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:46
hey mark the wonderful state of nsw.. east coast .. sorry was doing dishes..
bip_ 4u » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:48
What size tank do you have now? What size are you looking to get? Will you keep the one you have set up now, still running? Oh and a 50lb bag was way more than enough to do my 30 gallon tank, 2x50lb bags were more than enough to do my 30 gal and my 60 gal, I have approx 20-25lbs left over.
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:55
i have a 55 gallon tank,10 gallon quarantine (where the guy above is) and im doing a 40 gallon right now and yes i will be keeping the tank i have now. and wat are the best ways to cycle/get the tank ready?
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:56
but my uncle did all the setting up for the 55 and it took awhile before we could put fish into
Marc Draper » posted 2008/03/07 - 08:56
The dishes LOL!!! Bless ya!! Your so lucky to be in Aus, the UK aint too bad I suppose, our problem is peoples attitudes!!!LOL!!!
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:00
use some of the water from your tank you have running now.. if your running tank has a removeable filter pad swoosh it in your new tank to transfer some yuk and that will have good bacteria in it.. to get the stuff growing .. and you can buy bio boost, its called that at my lfs full of good bacteria to get it happening..
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:03
Thank you very much with this how long will it take to be able to put fish in? and im thinking of putting the Malawis in the 40 gallon would that be to small i only have 3 at the moment but i would like to get about 7 or 8 maybe a lil more?
bip_ 4u » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:04
It took a while to cycle the 55 gal cause you didn't already have an established tank. If you do a partial water change on your 55, keep the water and put it in the new tank. Use old media from the 55 to help cycle the new tank as well.
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:09
any info on the size of the tank for the 40 gallon or is it too small? cuz i dont wanna be one of those people with overcrowded tanks that wen i tell people about i get yelled at and look like an amature any help?
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:10
what it 40g in litres bip or robert...
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:13
my tank was great after doing that i but some cross breeds in two days after set up.. and they helped cycle but the water was great no problems with anything then my other fish went in 7days after... as long as you keep an eye on your ammonia and nitrites and nitrates robert... small malawis go well when there are few of them not overcrowded but they like a few to spread the chasing ...
bip_ 4u » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:15
151.42 litres, does that sound right Kylie?
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:15
hey mark someone has to do the dishes.. and it was unlucky me.. husband not here and i dont have a dish washer... my mother in law loves england has been a few times..
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:16
Kylie its like
40 US gallons = 151.416471 liters
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:20
SO if i moved the two yellow labs and the ahli into the 40 gallon and got like 2 peacocks and say 1 or 2 blue zebra's is that a good sounding tank?
to much or do they mix well?
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:23
that amount sounds ok not sure about the species.. peacocks and yellow labs pretty placid big blue guy is quite pacid just watch he dosent try to eat any little fellows... depends on the zebras some can be very agreessive depending on the breed..
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:25
cobalt blue zebra?
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:26
im guessing Mr blue will be the king of the tank?
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:29
Bip wat fish do u have in ur tank?
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:30
my book has them as being a bit aggressive ..if you have a few good rocks for hiding .. rustys are great very placid fish..
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:32
mooriis another not to aggressive fish... a clown loach or two for bottom cleaning..
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:33
do plecos work with malawis?
R Kizel » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:36
Well i would like to say good night to everyone and thank you for everyones help but its 4:34AM!!!! and i need to sleep have to work in about 3 hours haha on no sleep
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:38
yellow labs about 9-10cm... rustys 7-9cm,big blue 12-16cm,cobalt zebra 10-12cm, mooris 16 -20cm, and most peacocks in my book are beween 7cm to 15cm depending on species.. does that help...
***kylie *** » posted 2008/03/07 - 09:40
