Man I wish I was able to keep cichlids in a pond! Not much of an option when you live in Canada...or in most places I guess.

Hey I kept 30+ midas juvies in a 30 gal pond, and some in the lower 100 gal. They did great and even had convicts mixed in. They all got bigger than the ones inside. lots of plants in dirt. No parasites, No diseases. It does work..

Could you get a cichlid that big in a 50 gal.? Is it the type of cichlid that gets that big or is it the tank? That thing is beutifull!

Given that it has good water quality a fish like this can easily get 8-12 inches long in a 55G, but would probably be more comfortable in a tank that is 18" front to back, rather than 12" like a standard 55G would be.

What is the best thing in water quality to improve growth?

Keep the Ammonia and Nitrites at zero and keep the Nitrates low. Do this by having proper filtration, lots of water changes (minimum one 30% water change per week). Feed high protein foods for good growth.
