this little guy was sold to me as a amphilophus trimaculatum, can someone confirm this?

The Trimac bloodline has been so f**ked up with all the Flower horn hype, that it's impossible to tell whether they are pure Trimac, unless you purchase them from a reputable source. Yours looks Fh to me anyway.
