they dont change sex. are you sure that it is a female?

was bright yellow when bought but changed soon after. other female has stayed bright yellow

Female and juvie auratus are yellow and white. When the males hit sexual maturity, they change colors. Most likely you bought them as juvies. BTW mbuna are polygamous mouthbrooders. He may be very hard on a single female. Please consider adding a couple more females (but be ready to remove them if it turns out they were male instead).

any pleco will do fine in your tank. I have viewed many profiles and everyone seems to have some different kind., I have the most common species of pleco. and it does fine
