oscars and african cichlids... compatible?
Posted by: eddiejr ()

I have a 30gallon long with 7 african mbuna cichlids. I want to purchase a baby oscar and raise it. Question... Can I keep a 1-2 inch Oscar with my african cichlids till it grows to a reasonalbe size, then put it in a larger tank? All my cichlids are about 2 inches in size. The only fish I'm concerned about is my auratus. He can be pretty mean sometimes. Advice and opinions please.

Depends on what type of african. At an LFS I once saw a fairly large oscar (nearly a foot) getting the stuffing pounded out of it by a 5" male auratus (not quite sure why they the two together).

yeah they should be fine as long as you introduce them all to the tnak at the same time and are relatively the same size.

eddiejr already has 7 africans. don't do it cuz if the oscar is too small it will get killed and if it was too big it would kill some africans and then get killed by the auratus.

I appreciate all the advice. I really want to get the baby oscar I just don't see the need to buy the 50-55 gallon now when it's only 2 inches, you know? Still not sure what to do. All my other cichlids are pretty tame, it's just the Auratus that concerns me. A couple weeks ago he nipped up my Kenyi pretty bad but now they're doing fine. Not sure what it was, he just wouldn't leave her alone for two days straight.

an oscar growing 1-2"/month with 7 mbuna will turn that 30 gal into a sewer in no time... I promise. Then if the oscar fends off the africans long enough to be 4" (roughly 2 months) he'll start after the africans and probably kill them. The articles aren't exagerating with the oscars growth rate. If you put one in a 30 at 2" it will outgrow the tank almost as fast as you can buy and cycle a 55 (or larger). I'm not flamin ya or anything, but if you want the oscar, I'd get the big tank right away, they don't take being moved very well anyway, they pout for days or weeks. Use your own judgement, but check out all of the various cichlid boards and see how fast all of the people that had an oscar in a smallish tank needed to upgrade.
