At a certain size, males will turn black. However this is not a permanent color change with bumblebees. They can a will change back and forth from black to yellow and black depending on how they are feeling. For example the one I had didn't turn black until he hit about 4.5 inches because he was low in the pecking order and if a more dominate fish came near him, he would drop his black very quickly, but if he was chasing a girl, he would put on the black.

When you say turn black, do you mean completely black?

They can. Or you may still see parts of the stripes or they maybe become "dirty" looking (dominate females may do the "dirty" look too though). Here take a look at this profile and page through the pics and you'll see the variation that can occur. Oh and I forgot the ventral fins on male bumblebees get long, check that out in the pics too.

I love my Bumblebee. I've raised her for 6 months now in a 55 g with 10 other fish (electric blue hap, acei, johannis, ideotropheus, labs, zebra, and 8 fry.

I highly recommend the females (I got lucky not getting a male with my smaller tank. I didn't know how agressive they were till I read up on them).

She has a perfect temperment, gets along, doesnt bother the others, even gets pushed around a little by smaller fish, though nobody bites her like they do the female lab on occassion as she stands up for herself.

She changes colors and looks at me with her really cool wide-front face.

She is a perfect fish for a beginner and is very interesting to watch.
